In the tradition of the overwhelmingly successful "Current Year CD" format, The Blue Devils are proud to present their 2001 program, "Awayday Blue". The first corps to produce their own CD's, the Blue Devils introduced this format as a means of merging several important goals, including: providing our members with unique performance opportunities with major musical artists, exploring the most advanced digital technology and recording methods, and supplying our audience with a top-quality, hot-off-the press recording of our current year program. Only on these recordings will you find the unique blend of major guest artists in joint performance with the one-of-a-kind sound of The Blue Devils.

These artists come from a wide variety of musical backgrounds, from jazz to classical to rock & roll. The legendary Tower of Power contributes two former drummers to this recording—David Garibaldi and Russ McKinnon. Mr. Garibaldi joins The Blue Devils Percussion section on "The Groove 1999," while Mr. McKinnon can be heard with The Blue Devils Brass section on "You’re Still a Young Man" and "Squib Cakes." Alex Acuna, former latin percussionist with the likes of Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, U2, Paul McCartney, Yellow Jackets and Ella Fitzgerald, appears with the internationally reknowned Walfredo Reyes, Sr. on "The Groove 1998." Bob Montgomery, trumpet player for Clark Terry, Chuck Mangione, Louis Bellson and Tony Bennett, can be heard on "Well You Needn’t!", while "Someone’s There," and"Mattress Mambo" feature trumpet player Jim Manley.

We hope you will find this collaboration of outstanding musicians as exciting to listen to as it was to produce. We thank the creators, instructors and performers of The Blue Devils organization who made this recording possible, and we look forward to a long and ever expanding partnership with you, our fans and audiences. Thank you!
